The Lakeshore Nature Preserve occupies one third of the total area of the UW campus! The 300 acres are cared for by the Preserve staff within Facilities Planning & Management with assistance from volunteers, the Grounds Department, Campus Planning and Landscape Architecture, and private contractors. The mission of the Friends is to support the Preserve through land stewardship, volunteer work, financial support and advocacy, as well as education, research, and community engagement.
Picnic Point, the most cherished feature of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, is the legendary destination of generations of students at the University of Wisconsin, Madisonians, and visitors from the state and the world.
