Sandhill Cranes in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve

PictureSandhill Crane, University Bay.
In 2003 Sandhill Cranes produced young in University Bay for the first time in more than 100 years.  Margery Katz reported her encounter with the crane family in Bay. Already in the two previous years a Crane pair defended a territory in the Bay.

In 2005, the Sandhill Cranes again nested in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, possibly in University Bay.  On June 25, Edgar Spalding, the field trip leader, spotted two Sandhill Crane colts by the Class of 1918 Marsh on the Friends of the Preserve’s “Pretty Things with Wings” field trip.  The adults have been regularly seen flying from the Marsh to the soybean fields and back.  A single colt was seen with the parents in the fields at the end of June.

In early 2008, Sandhill Cranes began breeding activities in the Preserve. In 2009 Sandhill cranes raised two colts in the Preserve. The Cranes will probably continue to nest in the Preserve.  Please, if you see any crane chicks, let us know.  Please send your sighting dates and locations to Roma Lenehan. Photo by Glenda Denniston
